"Joan of Arc, or 'The Maid of Orleans,' is a heroine of France during the Hundred Years War, and she was canonizd as a Roman Catholic saint.
Born into a peasant family living in northeastern France, she saw visions at a young age that God had chosen her to lead France to victory against England. At age 19, after successfully convincing the future King Charles VII to let her lead the French army to the city of Orleans, Joan led several assaults against the Anglo-Burgundian forces, and drove them from their bastion and forced their retreat. Joan was defeated when she and her followers confronted Burgundian assault on Compiegne, she was thrown from her horse in her effort to defend the town and its inhabitants, she was captured by her enemy and later burned at the stake for witchcraft and heresy.
The story of Joan of Arc had attained a mythic stature in history, it inspired numerous works of art and literatures over the centuries."
